Zircon
Mohs Scale 6.5 to 7.5
A highly brilliant gemstone, this zirconium silicate occurs in a variety of colors. Known for its high refractive index (brilliance) and strong dispersion (fire). The tetragonal crystal system form short, stocky, four-sided prisms with pyramidal ends. Its strong birefringence (double refraction) makes back facets appear doubled, a key identification feature. Zircon is a popular alternative to diamonds, and often confused with cubic zirconia.
Known as the 'stone of virtue', zircon brings wisdom, prosperity and honor to those on its sphere. Used to help with insomnia and assist in detoxification, zircon promotes grounding, stability and emotional balance, while activating all chakras. Said to boost self-confidence and alleviate anxiety, while helping with focus.
Though prized as a gemstone, zircon is a crucial material in ceramics, with over 50% being used as an opacifier in tile production and glaze, as well as a structural ceramic for fiber optic connectors and dental implants. Zircon is used in precision casting and foundry molds due to its high heat resistance, making it useful for furnace and ladle linings. Zircon is also a source for producing zirconium metal, for nuclear reactor fuel rod cladding, due to its ability to resist corrosion and allow neutrons to pass through.
Use & Care
Use: Last On, First Off: Apply all lotions, perfumes, and hair/body sprays before putting on jewelry to prevent chemical buildup that can dull and damage the surface. Activity Check: Remove jewelry before swimming (chlorine), showering (soap residue and chemical exposures), or high impact activities like exercise or gardening to avoid damage. Chemical Exposure: Avoid household cleaners, alcohol-based sanitizers, and vinegar, which can alter appearances permanently.
Cleaning: Method: Use lukewarm water and mild (detergent free) soap. Action: Gently rub with a soft cloth. Drying: Crucial. Immediately pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not air-dry, as residual moisture can damage porous stones over time. Avoid: Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, which can cause fractures.
Storage: Individual Separation: Store each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment to prevent stones and metals of varying hardness scratching each other. Environment: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moisture Control: Consider adding silica packets to storage containers to absorb excess humidity that can tarnish metals and affect stones over time.
