Waxed Linen (Irish 4-Ply)

Mohs Scale

A premium, durable cord prized by artisans for its strength, versatility, and smooth handling. Composed of 100% flax fibers coated with a hydrocarbon wax, which is non-sticky, responsive and strong. Composed of four strands (ply) of linen spun together. Approximately 0.7mm–1mm, roughly equivalent to size 18 thread or 20-gauge wire. The finish is matte to slight sheen.

Historically, linen represents purity, cleanliness, and renewal. With deep biblical roots, it is often associated with righteousness and angelic beings. In some cultures, linen was believed to ward off evil and attract good luck, thus used to create protective charms. Linen is believed to possess high vibrational frequencies, cited as 5,000 Hz. It is considered a 'healing' material, historically used for sacred garments and daily practicality and comfort alike.

Historically used in high-end craft and industrial bookbinding. Ideal for basket weaving (coiling, lashing rims), bead stringing, bookbinding (Coptic, longstitch), leatherwork, macramé, kumihimo, and jewelry making. Widely used for sewing heavy leather, repairing leather goods.

Use & Care

Use: Strong enough for daily wear in jewelry. It will soften over time with wear.

Last On, First Off: Apply all lotions, perfumes, and hair/body sprays before putting on jewelry to prevent chemical buildup that can dull and damage the surface. Activity Check: Remove jewelry before swimming (chlorine), showering (soap residue and chemical exposures), or high impact activities like exercise or gardening to avoid damage. Chemical Exposure: Avoid household cleaners, alcohol-based sanitizers, and vinegar, which can alter appearances permanently.

Cleaning: Due to the wax, it is best to pat/wipe with a damp cloth as necessary.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place. The wax coating protects it from moisture and rotting, but extreme heat can melt the wax. Individual Separation: Store each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment to prevent stones and metals of varying hardness scratching each other. Environment: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moisture Control: Consider adding silica packets to storage containers to absorb excess humidity that can tarnish metals and affect stones over time.

Longevity: Avoid extreme sun exposure, chemicals, and soaking.
