Sapphire

About

Mohs Scale 9

A precious gemstone from the corundum family, sapphires are renowned for their high durability and vibrant color range. While typically associated with blue, it comes in every color except red, which is classified as ruby. Both sapphire and ruby are second only to diamonds in hardness. Sapphires frequently have 'silk' (fine needle-like inclusions), which sometimes produce six and twelve ray star effects (asterism).

Known as the 'stone of wisdom' symbolizing loyalty, strength, integrity and mental clarity. Primarily aligned with communication and self-expression, sapphires are slo known for lending intuition and insight.

Color-Specific Meanings:
Blue: Mental focus, order, and calm.
White: Crown chakra opening, spiritual clarity.
Yellow: Prosperity, creativity, and intellect.
Pink: Resilience, emotional healing.

Lab grown sapphires have been created since 1902, and don't show the angular growth lines of natural sapphire. Due to its chemical stability, high melting point and hardness, synthetic sapphire is widely used in technology. Used in insulating substrates for integrating circuits, smartphone screen covers, watch crystals, surgical knives, lens covers and scalpels. Due to its transparency from UV to infrared, it is also used for aerospace windows, infrared sensors and scanner windows.

Use & Care

Use: Last On, First Off: Apply all lotions, perfumes, and hair/body sprays before putting on jewelry to prevent chemical buildup that can dull and damage the surface. Activity Check: Remove jewelry before swimming (chlorine), showering (soap residue and chemical exposures), or high impact activities like exercise or gardening to avoid damage. Chemical Exposure: Avoid household cleaners, alcohol-based sanitizers, and vinegar, which can alter appearances permanently.

Cleaning: Method: Use lukewarm water and mild (detergent free) soap. Action: Gently rub with a soft cloth. Drying: Immediately pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth. Do not air-dry, as residual moisture can damage stones over time. Ultrasonic cleaners are generally safe for untreated or heat-treated sapphires. Avoid harsh chemicals, including lemon juice, on treated stones.

Storage: Individual Separation: Store each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment to prevent stones and metals of varying hardness scratching each other. Environment: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moisture Control: Consider adding silica packets to storage containers to absorb excess humidity that can tarnish metals and affect stones over time.

Longevity: whole sapphire is extremely durable, they can show wear over many years, with professional polishing restoring their luster.
