Gold Sheen Obsidian
Mohs Scale 5 to 5.5
A striking variety of volcanic glass characterized by a shimmering gold or bronze sheen, caused by gas bubbles and microscopic mineral inclusions (often hematite or magnetite) trapped within the high-silica lava as it cools and solidifies. When polished it exhibits a bright luminous gold sheen that can resemble galaxies or holographs. Sometimes referred to as “Dragon Glass”. Widely used for protection, grounding and revealing hidden talents.
Considered a powerful protective stone, acting as an energy shield. Attributed with exposing “shadow self” - hidden fears, traumas or ego driven behaviors - to allow for healing and transformation. Used for manifestation and achieving goals and prosperity. Due to its reflective surface it is favored for scrying and meditation. In Feng Shui it is often used to enhance “Fame & Reputation” (South) and “Career & Life Path” (North) areas.
Due to its ability to fracture into extremely sharp, non-crystalline edges (finer than high-quality steel), it has been used for surgical scalpels, as well as knives and arrowheads from ancient times to present. This has allowed archaeologists to track trade routes and date ancient settlements and graves. Highly popular in jewelry and carvings. Obsidian has been used for millennia in civilizations like the Aztecs and Mayans for tools, weapons, mirrors and spiritual, ceremonial and divinatory practices. Believed across cultures to connect the earthly world and spiritual realms.
Use & Care
Use: Last On, First Off: Apply all lotions, perfumes, and hair/body sprays before putting on jewelry to prevent chemical buildup that can dull and damage the surface. Activity Check: Remove jewelry before swimming (chlorine), showering (soap residue and chemical exposures), or high impact activities like exercise or gardening to avoid damage. Chemical Exposure: Avoid household cleaners, alcohol-based sanitizers, and vinegar, which can alter appearances permanently.
Cleaning: Method: Use lukewarm water and soft cloth. Action: Gently rub with a soft cloth.
Storage: Individual Separation: Store each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment to prevent stones and metals of varying hardness scratching each other. Environment: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Moisture Control: Consider adding silica packets to storage containers to absorb excess humidity that can tarnish metals and affect stones over time.
Longevity: It is not a crystal, rather a volcanic glass. The gold sheen will not fade over time. Keep away from harsh chemicals.
